| | Welcome
2008 Hunters!
Thank you for visiting us here and considering San Juan
River Outfitters for your 2008 hunt. New hunt dates and seasons have been
announced by the NM Department of Game and Fish for 2008-2009. What follows are
our selections for our 2008-09 hunt program.
We've studied drawing statistics for previous years and scouted extensively to
arrive at suggestions for an application strategy for 2008. There is always a
trade-off between very premium hunt units and your odds of drawing a tag.
Premium hunt units always draw a higher number of applicants, thus stiffer odds
of drawing a tag. The good news is that you are allowed to enter up to 3 choices
on a single application. Our job is to suggest some units for you to select as
your first choice, as well as providing some "fall-back" units to list as your
second or third choice. Should you not draw your first choice, you stand a very
good chance of drawing your second or third choice and still enjoy a quality
hunt.
We encourage you to apply for one of "Program Hunts" These are essentially a 3
hunt package which will maximize your odds of drawing a tag. We have had the
experience in prior years where many of our hunters applied for a single unit
only and we happen to draw successfully in that particular unit and very
sparsely in others. By encouraging you to use your right to apply for three
different hunts on your application, we hope to achieve a better balance of
hunters between the various units we hunt and at the same time give you a great
strategy for a successful draw. You can often draw a premium unit even as a
second or third choice.
We historically have very good success in getting you drawn for a hunt. One big
advantage to choosing a hunt with San Juan River Outfitters is that we'll submit
your application through the outfitter pool, which greatly improves your odds of
drawing success.
Take a good look at this page. We're confident you can find a hunt which will
meet your needs and schedule. The deadline for application for elk and deer
hunts is April 9, 2008. The deadline for Oryx applications is February 6, 2008.
There is a direct link from this website to the Game Department website where
you can make your application. When you proceed to our "Booking a Hunt" page
you'll be directed right into the application process. It is a very easy and
inexpensive application, and you may very well draw the hunt of a lifetime.
If you wish to discuss some of your options or have questions, feel free to call
me or send me an e-mail. I know the application process can sometimes seem
complicated, but believe me, it's actually pretty simple. I will be happy to
take your information over the phone and make your application for you. Be
aware, however, that all you'll need to select an '08 hunt and apply with us is
available right here at this site. Work your way through this page and then
proceed on to "Booking a Hunt" and you'll be on your way. Good luck and be sure
to let me help you if needed. We want to be your New Mexico outfitter of choice
and our service begins here. Our first step is getting you drawn for a tag.

These are our main hunts for '08. We suggest these as a "First
Choice" on your application. You may also enter one of these as a second or
third choice for an improved chance of drawing a tag. Separate applications
must be made for each species, ie: elk, mule deer, or Oryx. Up to 4 hunters
may apply on a single application. (2 for Oryx)

2008 Elk Hunts
Archery Elk
Unit 34, Bows Only, September 1-22, Either Sex Elk, High Demand License
Fee ($768), all "Outfitted" Hunt Packages Available. (This is a hot hunt and
our top suggestion for a "First Choice" bowhunt. This is a 22 day season,
and gives you great flexibility in choosing your hunt timing and also the
chance to extend your hunt)
Hunt Code: ELK-2-306
Unit 6A, Bows Only, September 1-15, Either Sex Elk , Standard License
Fee ($543), "Drop Camp" and all "Outfitted" Hunt Packages Available (Good,
first, second, or third choice)
Hunt Code: ELK-2-181
Unit 6A, Bows Only, September 16-22, Either Sex Elk, High Demand License
Fee ($768), "Drop Camp" and all "Outfitted" Hunt Packages Available (The
mid-September dates put this choice deep into the rut and makes it a superb
hunt. A highly recommended first, second, or third choice.)
Hunt Code: ELK-2-182
Archery Elk Program Hunt (Combination Unit 34, September 1-22; Unit 6A,
September 1-15; and Unit 6A September 16-22) Submitting your application
with these three hunts as your first, second, and third choice maximizes
your odds of drawing a quality hunt. The three hunts of the program are all
superb hunts. I am promoting this package to encourage participation in Unit
6A. This is an exceptional unit which we've been developing as a backup
option for our hunters. Unit 34 is a consistent good producer and very
popular with my archery hunters. Often my hunters will only apply for Unit
34 and I'll get a good group in 34 and only a few in 6A. Don't pass up 6A in
your hunt consideration! This is a beautiful unit bordering the legendary
Valles Caldera National Preserve. I suggest you avail yourself of this
excellent opportunity to optimize your NM archery hunt prospects by applying
for the Archery Elk Program Package.
For "Archery Elk Program Hunt" list the following hunts on your application
in this order.

hands for the the last several hundred years. It was recently purchased by
the government and is now operated as a public preserve. Application for
this hunt is handled separately ; you'll apply directly with the Valles
Caldera National Preserve. You may apply for this hunt and still apply for
any of our other hunts. The drawing for these VCNP hunts is held prior to
the regular state drawing. If you are successful, you'll be removed from
consideration for the regular state drawing. This hunt is well worth the
gamble. Special procedures are required to apply. click here to be directed

Either Sex Elk, Quality License Fee ($768), only "Special Opportunity Hunt"
packages available. This is a State Game Preserve and is some of the most
spectacular elk habitat there is. There are a very limited number of tags
available, but is definitely worth the try. Take a chance on a hunt of a
lifetime and put this a first choice on your application. It won't hurt your
odds of drawing your second or third choices and just might be a big
home-run. See our "Special Opportunity Hunts" page)
