Welcome 2017-2018 Hunters!

Thank you for choosing San Juan River Outfitters for your hunt. This is the page where you will proceed with booking a hunt and where we do all you'll need to get your application submitted into the 2017-18 lottery process for drawing a New Mexico tag.

In general there are very few changes in the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDGF) licensing process this year so the procedures remain simple, and we'll help you all along the process. A few things to keep in mind are:

1) Every new applicant in New Mexico must establish a user account and a Customer Identification Number (CIN). Setting up your new account and printing out your ID card is the first step in submitting your application. We will set this account up for you. If you have applied in New Mexico in the last several years that account will already be in place.

2) We will begin by meeting your NMDGF mandatory requirements for application through the "Outfitter Pool". Your odds of drawing a tag are greatly improved by submission of your application through the "Outfitter Pool", but we must first execute a document authorizing you for the pool. There is link below which will automatically generate your authorization. (It is unlawful to apply in the 10% set-aside outfitter pool using a New Mexico outfitter number prior to having a valid, signed contract with the same New Mexico outfitter. It is also unlawful to hunt with a license obtained in the outfitter pool designated for New Mexico outfitters without having a valid, signed contract with the same New Mexico outfitter prior to making the application. Those who apply by using an outfitter’s number and hunt on their own will be prosecuted for hunting without a valid license.)

3) You will pay your license fees upon submission of your application. If you are successful in the drawing, your license and carcass tag will be activated in your account and available for printout. If you are unsuccessful in the drawing, your license and tag fee will be refunded to you (less a $20 non-refundable application fee. Upon request, your “Game Hunting “ license fee will also be refunded to you if you are unsuccessful in the drawing.(less a $20 non-refundable application fee)

4) All applications must be submitted on-line. Paper applications will no longer be accepted. (I will take your application over the phone and submit it for you)

5) You will pay San Juan River Outfitters a $300 application deposit until we see if you get drawn. If unsuccessful in the drawing, the deposit is 100% refundable. If you are successful in drawing a tag, your $300 will be applied to your hunt and I will contact you with further instructions for submitting the balance of your deposit (50% by June 1, 2017 50% upon arrival)
This is the best gamble you'll make all year. Let's give it a shot. The worst that can happen is you're out $20; very likely you'll be in for the hunt of a lifetime.

6) The deadline for application is March 22, 2017. Let's get started early

REMINDER: IF YOU HAD A NM ELK OR DEER TAG LAST YEAR, BE SURE AND FILE YOUR HARVEST REPORT. YOUR 2017 APPLICATION WILL BE DELAYED IF YOU DO NOT REPORT. THE DEADLINE FOR REPORTING IS PRIOR TO FEBRUARY 15, 2017. Go to: www.wildlife.state.nm.us and log into your account to file your report. You may also call 1-888-248-6866 and file your report over the phone. (M-F, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM) Reports may be filed up to the March 22 deadline, but you will be charged a late fee, and your 2017 application will not be accepted until paid..

You have lots of options for your hunt so we need to work through those so we can develop an application strategy for you. Because of new developments in the process this year, it is important that we communicate closely about your application and make sure all bases are covered so we submit a workable application on time. It is especially important that we get your application right the first time because there is no ability to edit an application once it is submitted. I suggest you contact me immediately to start this process. There is always a big rush at the deadline, sometimes resulting in a crash of the Game Department computers. Let's avoid the last minute rush and get your application in early. It is very easy to have an application rejected on a minor technicality, so I'm here to help you get through the process. I consider this one of my first and most important services to you. Please do not hesitate to call me and we'll get your application going. Call me, John Jaquez, at 575-621-6158.

EASY APPLICATION

If you are ready to apply and want to jump start the process, click on the link below and it will kick off the process. You will get a blank copy of the contract we need to get you started. You will fill in the document on-line and electronically sign the contract. It is immediately delivered to us and it will get us started. I will be in contact with you shortly and we’ll quickly finish your application.

2017 Elk Hunts
Archery Elk

Unit 34, Archery, Bows Only, September 1-14, Either Sex Elk, High Demand License Fee ($90 NM Resident/ $773 Non- Resident), all "Outfitted" Hunt Packages Available. (This is a super hunt and one of our top four suggestions for a "First Choice" elk bow-hunt. This hunt has recently gone from 10 days to a 14 day season, and gives you great flexibility in choosing your hunt timing and also the chance to extend your hunt. I consider this to be one of the best elk hunts in the nation. This is the first elk hunt of the year and delivers great early season action, before the herd bulls gather a crowd of cows to bust you, and now with the extended season, you reach well into the heat of the rut. This is my own personal favorite)
Hunt Code: ELK-2-303

Unit 34, Archery, Bows Only, September 15-24, Either Sex Elk, High Demand License Fee ($90 NM Resident/ $773 Non- Resident), all "Outfitted" Hunt Packages Available. (This is a hot hunt and one of our top two suggestions for a "First Choice" elk bow-hunt. This is a 10 day season, and gives you great flexibility in choosing your hunt timing and also the chance to extend your hunt. This hunt is recently timed later and thus nearer the peak of the rut. Bulls are very vocal and responsive. This hunt will keep your heart pumping. This is our most popular choice)
Hunt Code: ELK-2-304

Unit 36, Archery, Bows Only, September 1-14, Either Sex Elk , High Demand License Fee ($90 NM Resident/ $773 Non- Resident), All "Outfitted" Hunt Packages Available. (This is a great hunt for the hardcore bowhunter, featuring some very productive (and tough) wilderness terrain. Among our top suggestions for a "First Choice" elk bow-hunt. This is now a 14 day season (was 10), and gives you great flexibility in choosing your hunt timing and also the chance to extend your hunt. You'll not find a better elk hunting value in the nation as far as big bulls, lots of them, and 14 days to hunt them! This is the first elk hunt of the year and delivers great early season action before the herd bulls gather a crowd of cows to bust you. Unit 36 shares the same great genetics of Unit 34 and great elk numbers. You are hunting the same bulls and great genetics of the adjoining Mescalero Apache reservation. )
Hunt Code: ELK-2-313

Unit 36, Archery, Bows Only, September 15-24, Either Sex Elk , High Demand License Fee ($90 NM Resident/ $773 Non-Resident), All "Outfitted" Hunt Packages Available. (This is a hot hunt and one of our top four suggestions for a "First Choice" elk bow-hunt. This is a 10 day season, and gives you great flexibility in choosing your hunt timing and also the chance to make your’s a ten day hunt. This hunt is timed as the rut gets in full swing. (It is a few days later this year and even closer to the peak of the rut) Bulls are very vocal and responsive. This hunt will keep your heart pumping. This season timing is our most popular choice. Unit 36 shares the same great genetics of Unit 34 and great elk numbers and trophy quality. You are hunting the same bulls and great genetics of the adjoining Mescalero Apache reservation. For the hardcore hunter, this unit has some very challenging wilderness areas that one of my hunters referred to as the "Jurassic Park of Elk" (There are some monsters in there.)
Hunt Code: ELK-2-314

Unit 51, Archery, Bows Only, September 1-14, Either Sex Elk, Standard License Fee ($90 NM Resident/ $548 Non-Resident). Drop Camp and all "Outfitted" hunt packages available. Unit 51 is a northern unit near the Chama area in the Carson National Forest. It has great elk numbers and good odds of being drawn for a tag. This is the first elk hunt of the year and delivers great early season action before the herd bulls gather a crowd of cows to bust you. It is adjacent to the Jicarilla Apache Reservation and thus enjoys the benefits of some of the great genetics brought in early by the tribe. We a suggest a Unit 51 hunt as a good "second or third choice" on your application. Although this unit is classified as "Standard" it offers a good hunt with great odds of being drawn for a tag. This hunt offers good trophy quality, and rates high in hunter satisfaction and success.
Hunt Code: ELK-2-168

Unit 2 is our home unit, and while it is a legendary mule deer unit, it is lesser known for it's rapidly expanding elk herd. We have steadily seen elk numbers increase and hunting opportunity improve. We a suggest a Unit 2 hunt as a good "third choice" on your application. While we do not begin to represent Unit 2 as being of the same quality of Units 34, 36, 51, or 52, it still offers a good hunt with great odds of being drawn for a tag. Read and then print out this page for step-by-step instructions on booking a hunt with San Juan River Outfitters.

Since there are very few or no "over-the-counter" licenses for elk, deer, ibex, Barbary sheep, or oryx in New Mexico, the first step of booking a hunt is getting you into the lottery drawing for a license. By choosing us as your outfitter, your application will be processed through the outfitter pool, which greatly improves your odds of drawing a tag. Our commitment is to help you make an educated hunt choice and submit a proper application by the March 22, 2017 deadline. By applying with us you are committing to use our services for your hunt if you are drawn for a tag. All applications must be submitted online. We will make the application for you. Just call me. John 575-621-6158

Getting started. Choosing a Hunt

Your first step will be determining what species you want to hunt; Deer , Elk, Ibex, Barbary Sheep, or Oryx and then, what weapons choice you prefer; Archery, Muzzleloader, or Rifle. If you will be hunting multiple species, we will submit a separate application for each for each species. Deer ,elk, ibex, Barbary sheep, and oryx applications all fall under the March 22, 2017 deadline. Turkey hunts don't require entry into the lottery drawing. Turkey tags are available over-the-counter. Simply call me and schedule the dates for your turkey hunt.

Next you will choose a hunt(s) from our schedule, which you’ll find at left. The various dates, hunt units, weapons choices and hunt options are spelled out here. I know you may have questions when it comes to a final decision on your hunt so please feel free to contact me directly. I am always happy to give you some advice on the pros and cons of the various choices. When you find the hunt that suits you, make note of the “Hunt Code”. You’ll need this code for your "First Choice" slot on your application. I also urge you to consider some alternate hunts to use as a second and third choice on your application. These "backup" hunts greatly improve your odds of hunting in 2o16-17. (I do not suggest you choose the 4th or 5th choice option on your application)

Determining the size of your group.

You are allowed to place up to four hunters on each application form. ( 2 for Oryx and Ibex) Each form is treated as a single unit for purposes of the drawing. Either all of you will draw or all of you will not. You are not required to apply as a group. This decision is based more on your willingness to have your party split up. You can each apply separately, but understand one of you may draw and the other(s) not. The smaller your group, the better your odds of drawing are. No preferences are given to large groups , and are indeed harder to get drawn.

Determine how you’ll pay

All credit cards are accepted. Be sure the Expiration Date on your card is no earlier than 6/17 . You will also be able to pay for your fees with an electronic transaction on your checking account. If you prefer, you can pay with a check to San Juan River Outfitters

I recommend that you place one of our premium units such as 34, 36, or 51 as your first choice and follow it up with Unit 2 as a second or third choice. This strategy will go a long way toward ensuring you will draw a tag and enjoy a quality hunt.

2017 Rifle Mule Deer
We primarily hunt Unit 2 for mule deer. This is our home unit. We live here and know this unit. There is no better mule deer hunting in New Mexico, and there is no better outfitter than SJRO for your Unit 2 deer hunt. Our private ranch in Unit 2b affords you one of the most unique opportunities for a trophy mule deer in the state. There is recent good news for the mule deer hunter. The season dates were all pushed one week later and thus deeper into the rut and migration dates. Deer hunting will be phenomenal this year with these season changes. Be aware we also hunt the public lands of Unit 2 so you can apply for these hunts on public lands and avoid the ranch fee.

We are adding some exciting new options this year for the mule deer hunter. We will be hunting some of the fine desert muley units in the southern part of New Mexico. We have been seeing some great deer being taken in these desert units in the last few years. The genetics of this region tend toward a wider set of antlers with good deep forks. (Reminiscent of Sonora Mexico deer) Management practices and restriction by NMDGF of tags issued has resulted in good improvement in deer numbers and trophy quality in these desert units. These "Sleeper" units have been largely ignored by the non-resident hunters because they don't get the press of some of the more famous units like 2b and 2c. Apply for one of these good units in the outfitter pool and you are almost guaranteed to draw. They'll make a good second or third choice on your mule deer application.

For that mule deer hunt of a lifetime, consider one of our Sonora, Mexico trophy hunts on our superb ranch in central Sonora, Mexico This a chance for one of those beautiful wide antlered giants of your dreams. Enjoy the experience of the warm, friendly people of Mexico, the great food and the comfort of our lodge. Your hunt is centered on a very large ranch with great mule deer habitat and population in all directions. An added bonus are the elusive Coues deer which you'll also be able to hunt. This is a top-flight experience in hunting the magnificent Sonoran "Buros" (mule deer) We manage our ranch for big deer and good hunting opportunity. We are always improving water and forage for our deer and invite you to join us in January 2018 for a rifle rut hunt in the heart of Sonora.

Call me to discuss this option. These private slots fill up fast so let's discuss soon. The new season dates will push all seasons deeper into the rut and the migration. Hunting has been tremendous.
